Are you a coach of a Junior Jazz or little league basketball team? How fun! During your practices, you need to teach them teamwork and have them do drills to improve their basketball skills. Here are a few ideas of drills that will help them improve and be fun to do.
Try the Bean Bag game. Divide your players into two teams. Have a pile of beanbags for each team. (You need the same number for both teams.) Place the beanbags in the middle of the gym floor. (Space them apart so that the teams won’t run into each other.) Have the teams line up on the sidelines. Blow your whistle to start the drill. The first person in the team dribbles the basketball out to the pile of beanbags. He picks up one beanbag while maintaining his dribbling. He dribbles back to his team and passes the ball to the next person. Play continues until you blow the whistle. The team with the most beanbags wins.
Another fun drill is called the One-Step Two-Step. Spread the players out on the court. Throw the ball to one of the players. The player catches the ball. He can then take only two steps and then he must pass the ball to another player. That player catches the ball, takes two steps and then passes the ball. If a player drops or bounces the ball, he is out. This drill helps the team improve their passing skill.
Use the Color game to improve your players’ reflexes. Select four colors (e.g. red, yellow, green blue). Each color is assigned a direction: forward, backward, to the left, to the right. Each player has a ball. You call out one color and the players dribble the ball in that direction. Continue calling out different colors to give them practice in dribbling and then quickly changing directions.
